This has all been rather exasperating, so now a Meccano break is called for. Digging through old copies of the Meccano Magazine publication I came across a model called the "Aunt Sally Fun Machine" which I thought might be rather fun to build, as well as having some use afterwards as a demonstration of physics interactivity in an amusing gameplay. If it works as expected, I'll make it available for downloading.
